a basic glossary for texas hold em online poker

Texas hold em is a simple game to play.  Every player only has two cards that are hidden from everyone else.  All other cards are face upwards on the table so everyone can see them.  This means you don’t have to remember what’s been played.

If you’re new to Texas hold em poker you’ll need to start by learning the basic terminology:

Types of Texas hold em online poker -

Limit – Every bet is fixed at every stage of the game.

No-limit – You can bet any amount up to the amount of chips you have on the table.

Pot-Limit – You can bet any amount up to the total of the pot.

The Play –

Pocket cards – The first two hidden cards dealt face down at the start of a Texas hold em online poker game.  No-one else can see these cards but you.  Players bet on these two cards and can either bet or fold.

Flop – The first three communal cards dealt face up after the first two hidden cards (pocket cards) Players bet again and either bet or fold on these cards.

Turn – One more communal card is dealt face up after the first three communal cards (the flop) so everyone can see it. Players bet on this card.

River – This is the last communal card that is dealt face up in a Texas hold em online poker game.  This is the last chance for players to bet

Showdown – When there is more than one person left in the game the showdown is where all the players show their hands.

Community cards/Communal cards – These are cards that are dealt face upwards and every player can use.

Button – This is a button that is moved round the board and shows who is the dealer.  In a Texas hold em online poker game the cards are dealt automatically but there will be a player who will be said to be the dealer and ‘on the button’.

Blind – This is a bet you must place before any cards are dealt.  This puts money in the pot at the start of play.

Pre-flop – This refers to a period of time.  It’s the period of time after you have received your first two hidden cards (pocket cards) and before the first three communal cards (flop) is dealt.  The betting is called pre-flop betting.

Showdown – This is where all the players still left in the game show their cards.
