how to win at poker

This is the first in a series of articles written about poker for people that would consider themselves beginners.  Understanding the game of poker better should help you win a few extra hands, whether it is poker that is played across a table or online poker the principles are still the same.

Poker is a game that if all things were equal and you could play long enough with the same person the law of probability states that you would come out of that poker game neither up nor down. If you played long enough you would eventually have the same winning hands as your opponent. That means you’d have a royal flush when he had 4 aces, you’d have four kings when he had four queens and the reverse is also true.

Why poker is loved by so many is that the game of poker is played by people, even online poker is played by people, and people are not all the same. Some people pick their nose others don’t, some people find the number 13 an unlucky number, others find 13 to be a lucky number. And because people are different means that the game of poker will never be equal, oh you might get the same winning hands as your opponent but he’ll win hands down when you have a flush and he’s got a straight just by the way he plays, not just the game but you.

Texas Hold’em is a game of poker that is very popular; it is played in casinos, at your friends’ house on a Thursday night and by many people that visit online poker sites where you can play whenever you want.

Texas Hold’em Poker can be played by up to ten people at a time. Each person is dealt 2 cards each and then there are five communal cards that everyone uses. Because each player has only two cards that we can’t see and that everyone is using 3 cards out of five that we can all see means that we can predict what winning hands are possible and we’ll also see that the winning hand will be very close to a losing hand and not always will the best hand win.

In the next article we will discuss how to work out the possible winning hand, there will be some examples that hopefully will help the penny drop. In the mean time have fun playing poker, don’t get stressed its only a game!!
