In Texas Holdem Poker there are five community cards that everyone can see and use and two pocket cards that only you can see. Once all the cards are dealt we need to work out what is the best possible poker hand that can be made, this is called the Nuts, we also need to work out what is the best poker hand we can make with our cards.
There are nine hands of poker, a pair, 2 pair, 3 of a kind, straight, flush, full house, 4 of a kind, straight flush and top of the tree a royal straight flush.
When the game is started you are dealt 2 pocket cards, no one can see these cards and in order to stay in the game you have to bet on these cards. If you are dealt a 2 club and a 6 spade what is the best hand you can achieve? At this stage you can get everything except a royal straight flush. If you decided to play and the flop comes out, 4 hearts, 7 clubs and king diamonds. We don’t have a poker hand at the moment but we have the possibility to make a pair if the 2 or the 6 come out in the turn or the river – the weakest hand in poker, if they both come out we’ll have 2 pair one up on a pair but considering their face values not strong hands at all as someone could have a pair of kings or two pair kings and 7’s. If we decide to bet and stay in the game and the turn produces a 5 spade we are now no longer looking at two pair, as far as pairs go we can only get one. Not much of a poker hand seeing as the highest pair would be 6’s. But with the 5 came the possibility of making a straight all we need is a 3 or an 8. If we stay in the game, and we do, and wow and behold it is an 8 of hearts, would you believe it, in poker, especially Texas Hold’em poker anything and everything can happen and does happen. From a no poker hand of a 2 and a 6 to a winning straight 4,5,6,7,8 but wait a minute someone is betting against us, what could they possibly have to beat our straight. Do they think we are bluffing, after all bluffing is a big part of poker. Could they have a better poker hand than I do? If so what could it be?
What beats a straight – a flush, but it is impossible to get a flush out of these cards. A full house – no, not with these cards the only possible poker hand to beat ours is another straight, if the other players pocket cards held a 6 and a 9 he would win.
What a beautiful game this poker is, now it is your turn, is he bluffing?
