Why in poker, is position important? Because if you are in what’s called the late position you have the advantage of knowing how most of the players have bet before you have to make a bet. Dependent on how the other players bet you could Play them. For example if you are the dealer and there are nine players and you’re playing Texas Hold’em Poker. You’re on the flop and the first three fold and the next four call, if you raise the four that called would probably fold next time round. Now you couldn’t do that if you were in any other position other than late position.
How to work out your position in poker? If there are nine players the first three players to the left of the dealer are in what’s called the early position. You have the small blind, big blind and the third player has to decide what to do. In this position you can’t work out if or what another player has in his hand so in this position you play cautious and bet on good cards.
The next three players are in what’s known as in the middle Position, pretty self explanatory; they are in a slightly better position in the sense that they have a better feel as to how players before them have bet. To be good at poker you not only have to have the cards you also need how to read people and the game. In this position you should still play cautious but you are in a better position to direct the hand.
The last three players are in what’s called the late position. You are in a position to force people out of the game because you have seen how the others have bet.
As I said above, poker is not just about having the cards. If you can’t read people or bluff your way you’ll never win at poker. You can have the best poker face in the world but you also have to know when and to whom. That’s why poker is such a good game that requires skill not just luck.
