There are many different aspects to a game poker including the cards, the betting, the style of play, bluffing, strategies, poker lingo, poker etiquette and so on. Sounds complicated but its doesn’t have to be, take a look at these must read tips and have the upper hand over the other players:
Bets – keep an eye on the other players – if you see a player checking and not bidding in at any time this can usually mean their hand isn’t very strong. Think about it if you had a great hand you would bid in no questions asked, right? Same goes for your opponents, if they hesitate, sit out, not raise the stakes, anything like that it means there hand isn’t the best and can be very much beaten.
Have a good hand? Raise the stakes – if you have a great hand in a game of poker raise the stakes. Why? Raising the stakes, confidently, tells the others players that you have a good hand and it’s good enough for you to tell the rest of the table about it as well (not literally obviously). This can make a few players back down if they think their hand isn’t as good, and it puts more money into the pot which if you have a good hand and win means you’ll get more money.
Don’t be scared to fold - most good poker players only play about twenty-five percent of their hands. That’s not a great deal of games at all. When you are dealt your cards, look at the cards and really think if it’s worth playing. Usually if you have to question it then it isn’t, but take a minute to think and then decide. Never be afraid to fold. The idea of the game is to win, so why would you play with a bad hand? If a player folds 25% of the time in a single sitting of a poker game what do you think this tells the other players? If I were there it would mean that when that player did play a game they had very good cards and I would back down if my cards weren’t that great. Fold like a beginner and win like a pro.
Bluffs – when the cards are dealt look at the other players first. It is quite hard to disguise an initial reaction, usually players try to bluff after this point, after they have assessed the situation, if you were there to see them to begin with you can usually tell if they have a good hand or not. From here it gives you the upper hand if they try to bluff later on in the game.
