poker etiquette – table manners

Knowing poker etiquette is one of the best things for you to learn to improve your game. It may not be a straight forward strategy or a nifty set of tips and cheats to win but knowing proper poker etiquette gives you the upper hand over players who do not know poker etiquette and it also means you can focus on your game knowing that you fit in a treat. The last thing you want to do in a poker game is stand out from the crowd, it draws attention to you and makes it harder for you to win because people will notice your every move.

Online Poker Etiquette

Playing poker in person is a little different than playing poker online and so there are different etiquette rules. For example playing online it is deemed rude to take a long time to play your go. So don’t start up a game of poker in a room and then leave to go to the shops, you’ll come back with a lot of abuse on screen from the other players as they cannot carry on until you have played. Most online poker rooms offer an online chat feature while you are playing so you can express emotions. The best advice is to keep it clean and keep it nice. If you annoy anyone by typing rude comments they’ll remember you and you want to blend in with the crowd, it’s in your better interest. Online poker rooms mostly prompt you along so its very hard to mess up the game, it’s a great way for beginners to learn because its like an online wizard asking you to make a choice between x,y and z. Because of this it’s quite hard to be rude and to not have a lot of etiquette other than the no no’s just mentioned.

Playing Poker In Person Etiquette

Again the same rule applies to not be rude or criticize another player. This can come to no good and it’s just pointless so as the saying goes if you have nothing nice to say don’t say anything at all! Don’t blame the dealer or any other player for anything, and don’t talk about the play when you aren’t in the hand. It’s actually against the rules to give advice to another player when in a hand you are not playing anyway and so keep quiet.  Keep up to date with what is going on in the game, don’t let it come to your turn and then ask what everyone has just played it slows the game down and the whole flow.

Most rules of poker etiquette are common sense, treat other players how you would expect to be treated and have consideration for the game and your opponents.
