Poker is played by millions of people every day online. Poker is played in casinos, in private poker clubs. Poker is played in thousands of homes all over the country every day. Poker is becoming more popular every day due in part to the screening of poker on the television on a regular basis. Out of all the poker games there are, Texas hold’em is the most popular, on the TV.
Is poker becoming a sport? Poker is a game, played by more than one person, it takes skill. Poker has rules, people find it entertaining and although its not physical it does get your heart beating.
Because poker is played by people the skill involved is not only reading the cards but reading people. In order to play well you have to understand the psychology of people. There are probably more books on psychology than there are on how to play poker and there’s a lot on poker.
From what I’ve read, and I’m no expert, there are at least sixteen personality types but they seem to fall into four groups. They have given these four groups names, Sanguine, Melancholy, Choleric and Phlegmatic, and they call poker terminology. I don’t think you can penguin hole people, there seems to be a little bit of everything in all people even though you probably have a main trait.
What we are looking for when playing poker is your opponents’ ‘tell’ something that will give them away so that you know when they are bluffing and when they’re not.
When people are playing poker you’ll notice there personalities, the aggressive, the talkers, the people who agree with everyone – at the same time, the thinkers and each one will have a tell. It is subconscious and unless someone has told them about it they won’t know they have one. They may have more than one. They might have one when they have a good poker hand, another for a poor one. They may play a particular way depending on their position. What ever it is, if you want to be a good poker player and win at poker you have to find it.
