Playing poker isn’t just about knowing how to play the game and knowing the rules, of course those are two important aspects but there is a lot more to it.
Here’s a question, what makes the difference between an average player and an exceptional player? Is it because one person is born with the poker talent and another isn’t? Well that is what some people say, but probably what is more true is that the exceptional player has learnt skills that they have honed over the years.
What about talent? Sure gut feelings and talent play a part but where does your gut feelings come from? Are they prebuilt into you when you are born - were you a little baby rolling around on the floor in a nappy with all these poker insights and gut feelings? I think a more accurate description of where talent and gut feeling originates is that it comes from practice, they are learnt over time from playing game after game with different players acknowledging the differences and making distinctions between each game and player and style of playing. Add all that together and you have a very acute talent and sense of gut feeling.
Here are some tips to take on board so you can improve your game and to make you an exceptional player:
Don’t Drink and Play – drinking rarely goes well with anything other activity other than a party! Don’t get drunk and play poker. Dinking clouds your judgments and decisions and not only will you make mistakes but you could possibly end up losing a lot of money.
Don’t play to win - The most important thing to take away with you from a game of poker is knowledge. Sure we all want to win, the idea of playing the game is to win! But if you don’t listen to any other tip but this one you’ll be 10 times the better player than you are right now. If you play a game of poker and don’t win anything but you can take away with you one new thing you didn’t know, or maybe it was just another idea you had already seen or heard but from seeing it again you’ll now use it, you have won. Watch other players and learn! Study what they do, their hands, their facial expression, they way they play, the way they move, study each player, and each game like you had to write a review on it when you got home. This will make you the greatest player ever born!
Never play when you are in a bad mood – poker is very much a head game, as with many sports. Your emotions play a huge part to the game. They affect your body, your mind, your decisions, your hands, the other players around you, and so on. If you have just had an argument with someone, heard some bad news, or just generally feeling down, don’t play, play tomorrow you’ll be thankful you did.
